Right now, there’s a crisis back home. You can help. There are more than 600 children on the urgent waiting list for Variety Kiwi Kid Sponsorship, which connects New Zealand children living in deprivation with a sponsor who can help with basics like warm bedding, closed in shoes, school uniforms and out-of-school activities like swimming lessons and school camps. This is a particularly tough time of year for parents, with back-to-school costs coming straight after the holiday period (most children in New Zealand are required to wear a uniform, which can cost more than NZ$300 per child). Variety is spreading the word to let Kiwi New Yorkers know that they can now sponsor a child from their home region, including Auckland, Northland, the Bay of Plenty and Waikato – the areas where children are in the most need – for just over $US1 per day (NZ$45 per month). Some children have been on the waiting list for more than six months.
Funds are targeted to the individual needs of each child and administered by Variety; donations cannot be spent on general household expenses. The programme was created in 2013 as a response to increasing child poverty in New Zealand, and so far, has transformed the lives of more than 2,800 Kiwi kids.
